The Little Dippers – “Forever”

Here is the original (?) version of Forever performed by The Little Dippers. After I lost this 45 I had forgotten the name of the singing group behind this pretty and haunting tune. Yet tonight their name popped right into my head. Weird like that.

The Way Back Machine!

iPod input not available in older models. :-/

I find comfort in Toyota Sienna’s aesthetic consistency when I go driving around town. The in-dash stereo is circa 2001 and the music I play on it tends to be no more recent in it’s creation.

Sonic Youth’s First Album

Sonic Youth - s/t 1982. SY's debut album

This record is quite good. I received a complimentary re-issue CD copy of it a few years ago along with Ciccone Youth. Since then I have barely taken the shrink wrap off. While Sonic Youth are an all-time favorite of mine I think my fandom peaked many years ago. The other day I was scanning my CD racks looking for some music to take along in The Way Back Machine. Somehow my entire CD collection seemed like it was falling on stale ears so I picked this out as a lark. I expected it to be an album of barely melodic dissonant early-80′s No Wave rock. I was really surprised at how tight the playing was and at how accessible the songs were.

Speedy West – Guitar Spectacular CD

Listened to this old favorite of mine in the car yesterday. A few of the songs had the power to take me away to another place that wasn’t traffic , road construction and angry people. Thanks Speedy!

The Queen

Helen Mirren in The Queen (2006) dir. Stephen Friers

I love me some “The Queen”! I enjoy this 2006 biopic and find it a fun movie to get excited about in the manner of a hollywood action blockbuster.  Telling a story set in recent history is always a dangerous proposition. (ex: W. Rudy, Curveballs Along the Way). But the talent assembled for this picture was too formidable for it to go bad. Eventually I  watched the DVD commentary by Royal Biographer Robert Lacey.  He offered many facts and insights into the Royals. In one instance Mr Lacey dissects a scene in which Elisabeth II and Prince Philip are having a picnic.
